I have zero travel plans :( but love posting travel photos, so I’m going to mine some past trips. Two years ago this summer, I went to Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Italy. My first stop, after being grounded by COVID for a year and a half, was Vienna, where I stayed in a recently (and only partially) rehabilitated flophouse with a heart-stopping view:
Superb photos and impressions of a great city. I am always reminded - especially while riding the big wheel - of that exchange in 'The Third Man' https://youtu.be/cydkTy6GmFA.
I have two good friends who are Viennese and I believe Vienna is truly in many ways the ideal city. Your photos are spectacular. What sort of camera do you use?
Gorgeous pictures, Eliza. That first picture is beautiful, yet also a little disturbing -- the silhouette of those old buildings next to a building crane. The statues of the males holding up the building are incredibly impressive, if perhaps a bit misogynistic. There's also a picture of two women holding up a building, but the close-up perspective makes that picture a little less impressive. The great sculpture that was so much a part of great architecture in years past seems to have disappeared in modern times.
One thing I can tell you: If you don't succeed at saving the world, you are well positioned to become a great photographer. What kind of camera do you use?
I've got a Fujifilm X-T20, so the baby mirrorless camera... it's starting to bug out after six years of heavy use, though, so I need to think about another :-(
I love Barcelona, Florence and Vienna. Munich is also wonderful.
For an off the beaten path adventure, I recommend Thessaloniki. It burned about a hundred years ago, so has less grandiose architecture than many European cities, but if you are interested in really ancient architecture and iconography, it's gorgeous.
It's safe, easy to fly to from most European countries, and is very inexpensive compared to most places in Europe. They have an international film festival in November.
Nice photography! Seeing the beautiful art and architecture reminds me that in few places in the US will one see this classic beauty of prior human ages. Perhaps if we had more beauty surrounding us in our daily lives, there would be less stress and less anger.
Very enjoyable. We so much need reminders of beauty and the better human drives. Generous of you to share such experiences.Took me back to Vienna’s buildings and Salzburg’s charms (no niqabs then, and not alone-- I was with My Dear and our two young children) A treasure that, and this post. Thank you.
So very lovely Eliza. Given that I have a special affinity for horses I was impressed that the carriage horses looked well-cared for. Thank you for sharing your gift for writing and for photography.
I don’t know which is your more profound talent -- writing or photography.
When I saw the caption photo of the cyclists I was convinced you were going to say that the one in the voluminous frock was a man...

I'm particularly fond of "Your Photo anno 1900!" I hope you don't mind that I've printed it out to frame .
I really like that one, too
Email me a pic if you frame it and put it up? (you can just respond to any Substack email from me)
Thank you so much for sharing your photos of Vienna, a city I have spent much time in and love. Very impressive photography.
Gorgeous! Thanks for sharing!

It's a lovely city. One of my favorites anywhere. And I've got a six-year-old baby mirrorless camera, Fujifilm X-T20 + kit lens. Nothing fancy.

Ah, pity we missed each other. Live in Vienna and would have loved to show you around.
Next time!
I got lost from my tour group in Salzburg and seriously considered staying lost and starting a whole new life there. So special.
What a pleasant and interesting diversion, thanks!

👍 Thanks for that little trip - great photos!
