My young brilliant cousin, who was homeschooled, writing fantasy novels at age 10, drawing anime characters, and who has changed her name twice now because she’s “trans masc,” has also claimed to be autistic.
Once, over at her grandmother’s for lunch, she made an announcement that she was autistic. Her grandmother said, “What? You haven’t shown signs of being autistic.” My young cousin was so outraged at this response she stormed out.
Yes, definitely an attachment to an identity category to explain why she’s never gone to college (her freshman year was covid year so she never went to college) and still lives at her mother’s.
I've been looking for this kind of content, so I thank you for showcasing it. I'm a woman in my 30s and, in the past few years, have suddenly gotten flooded with well meaning people telling me I'm definitely neurodivergent, probably AuDHD, and asking about my gender identity. My passions are now labelled hyperfixations, my successful career in STEM is held as proof that I must be some flavor of "gender diverse" and neurodivergent, and the content (and advertisements!) I see on social media keep trying to further convince me of this.
I am not much of a writer but have been looking for places to express and explore this. Should this be something you want to explore in future pieces, I'd love to talk to you about it.
In the British school system, a child gets extra help and resources if they are 'statemented', which means written up as having 'complex needs'. This can go all the way up to having one-to-one personal tuition in a separate facility, which is obviously very expensive and limits the resources available to other children in the state system.
Parents and teachers are complicit in statementing because it means more resources for children who have no identifiable physical disability, but are disruptive for whatever reason. Invariably, these children are diagnosed with a range of psychological disorders, which are supposedly unquestionable.
And so we've gone from having a handful of 'special needs' kids in any mainstream school to having several per class. They are the ones wearing ear defenders in school because they supposedly can't cope with noise, enforcing their social isolation. The Who predicted in 'Tommy' that cult members would voluntarily adopt being deaf, dumb and blind.
[Exulansic: Meka Shabazz came out as trans in high school. He graduated, then obtained a BA in dance. He founded Columbus Black Pride, and started writing bad checks to pay for his drag costumes. This led to incarceration. After his release, his life of crime continued, and he started a relationship with a drug dealer who could supply his cocaine addiction, which according to his own narrative, it seems he never overcame. He eventually had a stroke from the cocaine use and spent 3 years in a rehab facility.
Following that, he became homeless when his friends and family got sick of funding his addiction and lifestyle, at which point he began to access women's shelters until he was asked to leave for harassing a woman at the shelter. Another time he allegedly stole from a female resident. He was misgendered violently despite “long eyelashes and nails.” At some point, he obtained low income housing, paid for by his church, King United Methodist Church. I came to Florida for rehab. Some folks took responsibility and got their lives together (after years of struggle). Many did not. There’s a small number of people who have completely refused to own their fates though. They cluster in weird spaces online. They post Leftist content. They CONSTANTLY talk about their mental health issues (although these are just medical labels, you understand-their behavior and outlook are completely separated from their conditions, and don’t you DARE presume to tell them otherwise). They leech off of the kindness of strangers, and government programs, and GoFundMe campaigns. They frequently post about the racism or sexual assault (SA) they’ve suffered. They deeply interrogate their neurodiversity or intersectionality or oppression (but never their habits or virtues or opportunities). They continue to use drugs and engage in pathological behavior. They’re stuck in a miserable rut.
The WORSE thing you can do to such people (from their perspective) is to minimize their psychological labels and suggest that they can help themselves and provide them with constructive steps forward. They don’t want these things.
After all, they’ve been running from them all of their lives.

Yes, I'd be interested! The next few weeks are a bit crazy for me, but want to email me elizamondegreen@gmail.com and we can reconnect when I'm back?
Such a good interview and what a perfect title.
