Could this be a defence mechanism for entitled men following #MeToo? I'm told that Netflix sets won't put up with traditional Hollywood behaviour. Perhaps appropriation of the feminine identity is a free pass for sexist creeps, with an extra helping of praise and validation?

I think you’re not actually very far off with that. But I think these guys get there through a back door: my industry practices the “white men are evil” style of wokeness, and while, for lack of a better term, “normal” men might role their eyes a bit, and the more politically independent might grumble offendedly, the truly unstable narcissistic/borderline men truly cannot handle it, because on a deep level, they identify profoundly as victims. Enter the trans identity to provide these kinds of men with the ultimate victimhood that trumps EVERYONE- not one person, black, indigenous, woman, or man stand in their way now. This kind of feeding-the-monster with insecure narcissists does make them act out in all sorts of abusive ways, and I do think these men end up justifying all sorts of behavior they would never have justified when they were acknowledging their sex. Heterosexual men like this essentially talk themselves into abuse because every normal moral objection (“why would I want to do something that makes my female colleague uncomfortable? I’m not that kind of guy”) gets replaced with things like “she hates me, she’s an evil TERF, she’s not a decent person so why should I care how she feels.” But of course, she’s not an evil TERF, and he’s not a woman- he’s a giant, hetero guy with an unstable personality! It’s scary. Just like trans trains people to be borderline, it’s trains heterosexual men to be perverts and sex offenders, imo. Was there an unconscious desire for that from the start? Idk, maybe, maybe not? Depends on the guy.
I have absolutely noticed that from a couple of corners: Publicly, Charlotte (formerly Charles)Clymer had numerous women accusing them of behaving in sexually harassing and bullying ways back when they still identified as male. And then they switched to female and have had a mostly clean slate.
Privately, a person who I knew socially was accused of sexually assaulting someone in undergrad, and while nothing came of this, has since begun the process of transition.
