Resilience or terror? (Continued...)
"If you are operating off the UN’s definition of genocide it is certainly already happening."
This is just to say, the frenzy continues:
As is already happening ,trans healthcare will be banned out right for anyone. That on top of making vague laws regarding how people dress, we're going to have police arresting anyone who doesn't dress as a "normal" person. This will affect far more than just trans people.
They're already pulling data on who/how many people changed their ids ,they're making lists of trans people. They'll likely start making it so trans people can't use insurance or be seem for medical care. Then start restricting access to everything else.
We are getting dangerously close to the point where they start grouping us up.
This isn’t a matter of decades. Berlin in the 1920s was a queer cultural center, home to the world’s leading institute on sexuality and gender. Berlin in the 30s saw queer people rounded up and sent to concentration camps.
The Nazis came to power in 1933. The current year in the US is 1932. There are no moderate conservatives when it comes down to it. Every one of them will vote straight along party lines when the party tells them to. Why would they sacrifice their career and safety just to stand up to fascists? It’s safer to ride the tiger than to get off.
My advice for everyone targeted by modern fascists is the same as my advice for a Jew in 1932 Germany: it doesn’t get better, it doesn’t blow over. Get the fuck out now.
Hate to say it but it’s gonna get a lot worse from here. If you are operating off the UN’s definition of genocide it is certainly already happening. We are at 2/5 of their markers of genocide and it could be argued there have already been signs of a 3rd and 4th being in the works. A lot of people cite the reason that American society is generally starting to become more accepting of trans people as the reason that things will not continue to deteriorate but keep in mind that we are working with a system that has been adeptly engineered over a half a century long effort to be rigged to keep a party in power that the majority of americans do not support. I don’t mean to be all doom and gloom but I work at a nonprofit that works to improve LGBTQ+ rights in the southeastern US and some of my coworkers are people who have been analyzing and monitoring anti-LGBTQ+ legislation for years to decades and they are echoing my sentiments. Clearly the courts at least in deep red states do not care much about constitutionality or a lot of the laws being passed would’ve been struck down by now. Coming after trans kids was just the tip of the iceberg, now a few states are looking at banning transition care for adults up to 25-26 years old, drag bans are starting to get passed (Tennessee for example) which clearly contain vaguely worded language that will likely allow the criminalization of being trans, West Virginia has introduced a bill that would make it illegal for trans people to exist in the presence of minors, Florida introduced a bill the other day that would abolish the democratic party in the state if passed, the list goes on. I hear a lot of people say there’s no way these bills will pass, the courts won’t allow it, etc etc but I’ve been hearing plenty of liberal people say that about every seemingly insane law for the past year or two, and what do you know? No one wants to believe what’s happening until it happens. I have studied American history to a T, actually it was my major in college, and I’ve been saying things were going to get this bad for the past 2-3 years and everyone told me I’m crazy and/or overreacting, and now that we’ve gotten to this point I don’t think I’m going to continue to ignore my gut feeling that has already been proven correct. A lot of Americans seem to have this feeling that fascism could never take hold here but it can really happen anywhere. It was only a bit over 2 years ago that white supremacists nearly mass murdered our Congresspeople after all, I don’t think people acknowledge just how unprecedented this was for basically the last 2 centuries. Personally I am looking to move up to New York State by January 2024 at the latest to buy myself some time since that’s one of the states where they wouldn’t be passing virulently transphobic laws and then start applying to grad schools internationally to try and get out in fall 2024. Not as much recent precedent for this yet but I’m scared if Trump gets re-elected or god forbid Desantis gets ahold of the presidency they will take things to a national level, in fact Trump has already vowed that is what he will do; I mean you never really know what he means and what he doesn’t but I’m not willing to take that chance. Desantis would 1000% be doing it. I don’t want to fearmonger, and I am not living in fear myself, actually everything going on has motivated me to present fully as myself even quicker than I was originally planning on it (granted I live in a relatively safe town for trans people) and I’m not going to crawl into a hole over this but we need to not be naive and those of us that have the means to should seriously be taking steps to protect ourselves because 99% of democrats damn sure won’t do it for us. Sorry for the novel I really did not realize how much I typed lol but please do research, staying on top of current events and laws is more important now than ever so we can be ahead of the curve, but of course take care of yourself, keep yourself sane and stay safe, I want all of us to make it through this more than anything
They keep escalating because they get away with it. Every time they push a little further towards their goal of eradicating us. We didn't end up with the extermination camps in WWII immediately. It's a slow process.
And over at r/ftm, under the subject line “US genocide of trans people”:
We are seeing worse and worse rhetoric in our law making systems. Our children are under attack, our lives and right to be are under attack and it's not looking like it'll stop. the Right wing religious cult is setting ground work for a very scary next few years.
We need to be organizing together to stop this. We can't quietly face persecution like this, and no one's out here talking about it. The time for petty infighting is long over and we need to be working against our active oppressors.
Does anyone have already an active resource for trans people to organize? Anyone interested in collaborative work doing so? Lmk.
It starts with othering, i.e, "They're not like you and me, they're not NORMAL like us". The next step is attributing some genre of societal collapse to our existence. We're seeing that in the "won't somebody think of the children?" defense against drag queen story time, healthcare for trans children, and the idea that queer people groom kids for perverse activity. The next step is physical markings, like the way Jews were branded with the star of David and gay people with pink triangles. It makes us easier to round up in the event of an attempt at segregation/genocidal acts. We all know what happens next.
So no, we are not CURRENTLY facing the literal definition of genocide, but we are experiencing the steps that have historically been taken by fascist systems of oppression towards genocide. I understand where OP is coming from, and they're not wrong in being worried and angry. Nitpicking the word 'genocide' is sort of proving the point that we need to stop infighting if we want to get anything done and protect ourselves. Sentiment over definition.
A poster on r/asktransgender says: How many of you realize we are past the 4th Step of genocide?
We really should stop kidding ourselves saying, "its just backlash" or "things are better than ten years ago". No things are not better ten years ago. Ten years ago we where invisible and at most treated with confusion. Today we are treated with outright hostility, disgust and hate. We shouldnt ignore this.
the Weimar Republic was very progressive before the Nazis took hold. infact i'm honestly beginning to believe that us trans people will always be the pinnacle of progressivism; once we're accepted, it's only a matter of time before we integer overflow back into fascism and start over again. we're the ultimate opponent to regressive ideologies and i think many believers of said ideologies think so too.
it may be better than the past, but that doesn't matter. genocide can happen at any moment. it's foolish to do what people in Nazi Germany did and just continue going "oh, it'll get better" until it was obvious that it never could. in which case, it'd be too late, anyway.
I do think we are a lot farther than the Weimar Republic was before fascism took hold. I do ultimately agree that trans acceptance is the social endpoint of Leftism. By that I mean, once trans people get adequate human rights, the only thing left is socialist economics. True equality and liberation, whether it is Trans, Women's, Men's (through the disassembly of patriarchy), or racial in nature, is only possible through the destruction of Capitalism. Don't get me wrong, we need to attack both the social and economic fronts with equal force, but both are interconnected on a fundamental level. The resurgence of fascism means that we are very close to the flashpoint of revolution and a potential end to Capitalism. Fascism is the immune response of Capitalism, manifested through the consolidation of state power and stochastic hate. But people can still die from infections all the time.
There is hope, but we need to stop dragging our asses. The size and global influence of the United States basically means that whichever side wins will have outsized global power. We basically are on the cusp of the final battle at the end of Capitalism.
I'm not saying anyone should commit political violence, but i am saying this would be a good time for trans people to get strapped
Even the ‘optimists’ aren’t immune to the idea:
Today is one of the best times in history to be trans. But stay on guard a little bit. That could also have been said about the Weimar republic right before the Nazis came in and burned all the literature and clinics for trans healthcare down. The machines of political and interpersonal violence against us are ramping up. I wouldn't say we're in genocide territory yet, but it does feel like we're at a sort of tipping point where things can go one way or the other very quickly.
What these goofballs don’t seem to grok is that ten years ago the trans movement wasn’t demanding that we indoctrinate our children in state schools and provide resistance free pathways (“ban conversion therapy”) to bodily modification (some might say “mutilation”) and lifelong medicalization of adolescents (who have been having identity crises since time immemorial) which, among other things, leaves those children as anorgasmic adults... that is, makes life tangibly, permanently worse in at least one way. All in the interest of fixing them when research indicates that many (most?) will age out of it anyway.
So yeah, there’s a little more negative affect around trans issues than before because people don’t like when their kids are indoctrinated into pernicious belief systems and potentially railroaded into self-damaging decisions.
I know depression disposes one toward catastrophizing. But that doesn’t mean that wanting to pump the brakes on the latest psychiatric malpractice (today it’s surgeries for gender, in the past lobotomies and hysterectomies) is even in the realm of approaching active genocide or even genocidal ideation
For a while I've seen that trans activism promises utopia, an Eden without capitalism, racism, and norms.
What puzzles me is how they dream of socialism, if not communism. They know that historical and reigning communist states aren't trans friendly, don't they? Otherwise they may seek asylum in Cuba or Vietnam instead of New York.
